When to go
Located outside the hurricane belt, the climate on Bonaire is mostly dry throughout the year with occasional tropical showers, more often in the months of October through January. Air temperatures average at 27ºC and water temperatures around 26ºC. Although a year round destination, the best time to go would be during low season between April and December when the rates for accommodation are considerably less expensive.

Getting there
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has daily flights to Bonaire via Amsterdam from various UK airports. There is also the option of flying via Amsterdam to Curacao and take a short island hopper flight to Bonaire with Dutch Antilles Express. The flight from Amsterdam takes about 9 hours.

Getting around
The best way of getting about is to hire a car, scooter or a bicycle. Distances are not great, but heat can be! The speed limit is 60kph and outside Kralendijk you will encounter very little traffic. There are taxis at the airport but they are difficult to find around the island and there is no regular bus service.

Entry Requirements
European community nationals only require a valid passport and a return ticket.

Local Airport Tax
US$6.00 on local flights and US$32.00 on all international flights, which is payable upon your departure in Bonaire and might be subject to exchange rate fluctuations.

Language
Dutch is the official language, but the local population also speaks Papiamento, which is a mixture of Dutch, African, French, Portuguese, Spanish and English. Anyone remotely involved with tourism also speaks English, as well as Spanish and of course Dutch. Remember to speak slowly, the locals are used to American English and it might take them some time to get used to your accent.

Money
Although prices are usually quoted in the national currency, the Netherlands Antillean Guilder, U.S. currency is accepted everywhere, as are traveller's cheques and most major Credit Cards. You will find ATMs at major banks in Kralendijk.

Health
No special vaccinations are required prior to arrival and it is safe to drink tap water anywhere on this island. However, take some insect repellent with you for the sunset hours.
